There had been much talk for the need of better streets for a long time. A grader was brought by the town in 1925 and the streets were much better maintained, but in the spring of 1928, the Town Trustees published a resolution calling for the building of four blocks of downtown brick paving.

There was talk about the financing and it was decided that lot owners would each pay for their own paving at $386 per lot. A contact was let to the Stranton Co. and paving started in August 1928. The town wanted to extend the paving west on Main Street and south on 2nd Street to the highway, but met much opposition from property owners. Only the original downtown was paved with 2½ inch bricks over 4" of sand and 6" of concrete.

The pavement was later extended south on 2nd street to the highway in 1929.
