Part III
As mentioned in the last letter, R. A. Crosby was the minister when
the red brick church was dedicated. He served the congregation for two more
years and was followed during the rest of the teens by: Paul H. Talley, J.B.
Gregory, N.A. Phillips, T. Edgar Neal, J.P. McBride, and S. W. Franklin.
During the 1920s our ministers were: Phil Chappel, C. S. Dowdy, Virgil
Alexander and Fred A. Tucker. In 1929 the Rev. H. A. Longino came here and
remained for 6 years. He was followed in the 1930's by M.B. Norwood, J.B.
Thompson; J.H. Crawford and A.F. Click. Pastors of the 1940's were E.B.
Thompson (twin brother of J.B. Thompson who had served earlier) and M.G.
Brotherton, who served for 5 years.
In the early years of our church it seems that roost of the Oklahoma
Panhandle was affiliated with the Northwest Conference of Texas and we
remained in that conference until the Panhandle region became a part of
the Oklahoma Conference sometime in the mid 1950's. We were still in the
Northwest Texas Conference when ground was broken for our present building,
but at its completion, we were a member of the Oklahoma Conference. Until
the 1950's appointments were made in the fall. Since then, appointments of
ministers to congregations have been made in late May. The trend used to
be to move ministers often, but now we tend to keep ministers for longer
periods and appointments are not now always made at the time. of the Annual
Conference. The 6 years that the Rev. Longeno served us was the longest
service, followed fay several ministers who have been with us for 5 years.
